Rio de Janeiro experienced its hottest day in over a decade, reaching a scorching temperature of 44 degrees Celsius (111 F) on Monday. The city’s residents flocked to the beach and ocean to try to cool off as the extreme heat wave was declared by city officials.
The high temperature broke the record set since the introduction of the climate alert system in Rio over 10 years ago, with the second-highest reading being 43.8°C in November 2023. The city has issued an alert for extreme heat and set up hydration stations to help residents cope with the sweltering temperatures.
Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes has ruled out canceling Carnival festivities despite the heat wave, but advised revelers to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. This warning comes after a tragic incident during Taylor Swift’s concert in Rio last year, highlighting the risks of extreme heat at public events.
