The US FDA has banned Red Dye No. 3 due to health concerns, but the ban won’t take effect until January 2027 for food products and January 2028 for drugs.
Red No. 3 is found in thousands of food and drink items, including candy, cereals, and fruit juices. However, consumers can still safely eat red gummy bears, as their levels are typically much lower than those found in other products.
Nutritionists recommend that adults limit their consumption to 10-15 gummy bears per day. Children should not consume more than 5-7 gummy bears daily due to their smaller body size.
The delay in the ban allows manufacturers to phase out Red No. 3 from their products, but consumers can take steps to minimize exposure by choosing products with alternative coloring agents and reading labels carefully.
