Utah gymnastics is on the cusp of history, with a familiar kind of success waiting in store at Saturday’s national finals. The Red Rocks tied with Denver for first place in the Salt Lake City Regional semifinals Thursday night, setting up a four-team showdown that includes No. 5 UCLA and No. 12 Minnesota.
Utah, ranked No. 4 in the country this season, is a strong contender to finish in the top two and advance to nationals for a record 49th time. Despite a somewhat rocky performance Thursday night, the team’s prospects remain good due to its home advantage and solid roster.
However, the Bruins from UCLA pose a significant threat, with a NCAA-leading six All-Americans this season and a strong national qualifying score of 197.680. Minnesota Golden Gophers also have some momentum, thanks in part to star Mya Hooten’s exceptional floor exercise skills.
The Red Rocks’ competition will be fierce, but Utah’s experience and home-field advantage could give it an edge. If the team can replicate its semifinals performance, advance to nationals for the 49th time, and make history, the possibilities are endless.
