Red Sox Ace Garrett Crochet Flirts with History, Escapes No-Hitter Fiasco

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora narrowly avoided controversy on Sunday when left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet threw 96 pitches into the eighth inning before being relieved by Chase Meidroth’s game-tying single. With a no-hitter on the line, Cora made the decision to let his ace keep going, ultimately allowing the Red Sox to escape with a 2-0 lead and a 3-1 win over the White Sox.

Cora, who had never seen a no-hitter in his 989-game tenure as manager, faced a difficult decision. Crochet had thrown 7.5 innings without damage, but his pitch count was climbing into the mid-nineties. The Red Sox promised Crochet that he would be allowed to complete the game until a ball fell in, but Cora ultimately made the call.

“We’ve got to make decisions,” Cora said. “You’re in that dugout and you’ve got a chance to do something special, but at the same time, you have to balance our season.”

Crochet had expressed concerns about his workload after his last two starts, but he felt good enough to continue on Sunday. He ultimately allowed just one hit, striking out 11 and walking one batter.

Cora praised Crochet’s performance, saying “he stepped up and delivered for us.” The Red Sox’ victory marked a welcome turnaround in their five-game losing streak, with Crochet’s stellar outing providing a much-needed boost to the team.
