The Chicago White Sox have acquired catcher Blake Sabol from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations. Sabol, who was designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier this month, will look to turn his season around with the White Sox organization. A former San Francisco Giants catcher, Sabol had limited success in 2023 and struggled significantly at Triple-A affiliate.
Sabol was selected from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2023 Rule 5 Draft after injuries plagued the Giants’ catching corps. He took on a significant role, sharing duties with Joey Bart and Gary Sánchez. However, scouts questioned his long-term viability as a backstop due to defensive limitations.
In 2023, Sabol hit .235 with 10 doubles, 13 home runs, and 24 walks in 344 plate appearances, but struggled defensively at both catcher and left field. Despite a strong start, he eventually found himself relegated to the minor leagues, where he showed limited success. The Giants designated him for assignment this offseason, and he was claimed by the Red Sox before being traded to the White Sox.
With the White Sox, Sabol will have the opportunity to prove his skills in a new environment. His recent struggles, including a .167 average at Triple-A affiliate, suggest that he may need to improve if he hopes to make an impact with the team.
