Red Sox Eye Forrest Whitley After Astros Designate Him for Assignment

The Boston Red Sox may be interested in acquiring a reclamation project, as the Tampa Bay Rays have acquired Forrest Whitley from the Houston Astros. The 27-year-old right-handed pitcher had his prospect buzz dwindled after a disappointing season and surgery, but now has another chance with an organization known for developing young pitchers.

Whitley was drafted by the Astros in 2016 and entered their farm system at age 19, making a name for himself with a strong 2.83 ERA and 143 strikeouts in his rookie year. However, he struggled in 2019 with a 7.99 ERA and was suspended for 50 games in 2018.

Despite this, Whitley regained some of his former form before being designated for assignment by the Astros. In his latest stint with the team, he allowed two unearned runs in three relief outings and permitted nine hits, six walks, and 10 runs in 7 1/3 innings.

The Red Sox have been gaining ground on the Rays, and a potential acquisition of Whitley could be an attractive option for them. While it’s unlikely that he’ll assume a significant role with Tampa Bay due to their strong bullpen, Whitley still has a chance to prove himself in a new environment and potentially revive his career.

The Red Sox have made some key moves recently to strengthen their roster, and this acquisition could be the next step in their pursuit of a playoff spot.
