Red Sox Secure Alex Bregman with Creative 3-Year Deal

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract, beating out several other teams in the process. While the deal seems straightforward on paper, it contains opt-outs after each season, which could make Bregman available as a free agent in 2025.

According to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, there are significant deferrals in Bregman’s contract, which reduce its average annual value from $40 million to $31.7 million for luxury-tax purposes. This makes the deal less impactful on the Red Sox payroll, while still providing a substantial signing bonus of $5 million.

Bregman was reportedly seeking a long-term contract worth around $200 million this offseason but has instead secured a structure that benefits both parties. The 31-year-old will have the opportunity to play half his games at Fenway Park, where he has already enjoyed success with a .375 batting average and seven home runs in 21 regular-season appearances.

The Red Sox are still projected to face a significant luxury-tax bill, but this deal seems to be a compromise that works for both sides. In a statement, Speier noted that the team found a “structure that made sense” for Bregman, while also mitigating their own financial obligations.
