Catcher Carlos Narváez hit a walk-off RBI single off the Green Monster in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting the Red Sox to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Yankees at Fenway Park on Friday. The game-winning hit came after Narváez threw out Anthony Volpe trying to steal third base for the first out.
Narváez’s strong defense has been a revelation for the Red Sox, and he credited his teammates in the pitching staff for helping him control the running game. “The pitchers are doing a great job of controlling the running game,” Narváez said.
The Red Sox acquired Narváez from the Yankees on the same day they acquired Garrett Crochet from the White Sox. Crochet praised Narváez, saying “You talk to him and you forget he’s still classified as a rookie. It’s really special.”
Narváez had a clutch play in his previous game against the Rays, catching José Caballero stealing third base for the second out of the eighth inning. Manager Alex Cora said Narváez made a great throw, and the Red Sox were fortunate to have him on their team.
The Red Sox’s only concern with Narváez was his arm strength, but catching instructor Parker Guinn worked with him during spring training to improve his mechanics. Since then, Narváez has shown significant improvement, making plays like his throw out of Volpe and the game-winning hit.
