The Detroit Red Wings have bolstered their goaltending by acquiring veteran goalie John Gibson in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks. The deal, completed on Saturday, June 28 during the 2025 NHL Draft’s second day, sent goalie Petr Mrazek and two draft picks to Anaheim.
Gibson, 31, has two years remaining on his $6.4 million-per-year contract and brings stability to the Wings’ net, potentially forming a tandem with Cam Talbot. The Pittsburgh native boasts a career 2.89 goals-against average and .910 save percentage in 506 games with the Ducks.
A key factor in Gibson’s decision to join the Red Wings was the team’s need for goaltending depth. With Gibson expected to partner with Talbot, who is nearing the end of his contract, this move should provide a more stable backstop for the team.
The trade marks a significant shift for Mrazek, who struggled with injuries and inconsistency last season, appearing in just five games for the Red Wings before being traded away.
