A Reddit tipster played a crucial role in cracking the Brown University shooting case, bringing investigators from Rhode Island to New Hampshire where they found the suspect dead.
The anonymous Reddit user, known as “John”, initially posted about a grey Nissan with Florida plates that he thought was suspicious. His post prompted police to tap into street cameras around Providence and eventually led them to a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, where the suspect, Claudio Neves Valente, was found dead.
Valente was believed to have killed two students at Brown University and a professor from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before taking his own life. The police investigation is ongoing, with authorities still trying to establish a motive for the shootings.
John’s involvement in the case is being hailed as a critical breakthrough, with the Rhode Island Attorney General saying “He blew this case right open.” It’s unclear whether John will receive the $50,000 reward offered by officials, but FBI Agent Ted Docks said it would be logical to think that he would.
