Today marks twenty years since the release of Resident Evil 4 on Nintendo GameCube and PlayStation 2. The game’s release was marked by a unique marketing strategy: it came with a chainsaw-shaped controller designed by NubyTech.
The controller, which featured yellow or red blades depending on the version, was part of the game’s lore and was inspired by the Chainsaw Men and Sisters from the game. Although the final commercial version lacked sound chips that simulated the chainsaw’s sound, it still made a stylish addition to the console.
NubyTech put effort into creating a collector’s item, with its box recreating the in-game houses from the game. However, the controller was impractical for everyday use due to its uncomfortable design.
While it may not have been the best gaming experience, the chainsaw controller is an interesting relic of video game history. Its unique design and attention to detail make it a nostalgic reminder of Resident Evil 4’s impact on the gaming world.
