Renée Zellweger Returns as Bridget Jones in Mad About the Boy

Renée Zellweger has once again slipped into her iconic role as Bridget Jones, and director Michael Morris confirms that she was back in character before he even called action on set. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Morris shared his experience working with Zellweger, describing her as “a wonderful, warm human being” and “really magnificent actress.”

Morris noted that Zellweger’s presence on set was not just impressive but also deeply affecting. “It is absolutely true to say that she walks in as Bridget and there’s something really profoundly affecting about that,” he said. The director recalled feeling like he had an “out of body experience” watching Zellweger bring the character to life, even behind the scenes.

The film, Mad About the Boy, marks a new chapter for Bridget Jones as a widowed mother of two navigating the dating pool. Morris aimed to capture the emotional depth of the character’s journey, particularly in her reunion with Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy, who has passed away. The director incorporated personal touches, including real pictures of the on-screen couple throughout Bridget’s home, to make the loss feel more authentic.

Morris credits Zellweger’s ability to embody the character, having previously played her in three films based on Helen Fielding’s novels. He believes that Bridget Jones remains relatable today due to its portrayal of real people and real life, rather than a glossy, perfect version of romance. By balancing comedy with heart, Morris aims to create a more authentic rom-com experience.

With Mad About the Boy streaming now on Peacock, fans can once again reconnect with Zellweger’s beloved character and relive her journey.
