Despite President Trump’s efforts to support oil and gas industries, renewable energy has emerged as the most cost-competitive form of generating and distributing electricity in the United States. According to a report by Lazard, onshore wind costs between $37 to $86 per megawatt-hour (MWh), while utility-scale solar costs range from $38 to $78 MWh. Fossil fuel energy sources like coal, gas, and nuclear are more expensive, with prices ranging from $71 to $173 for coal and $141 to $220 for U.S. nuclear. Experts attribute this shift in cost competitiveness to lower operating and maintenance costs for renewable projects compared to fossil fuels, which have fluctuating oil, gas, and coal prices.
