Award-winning US poet and civil rights activist Nikki Giovanni has passed away at the age of 81, following her third cancer diagnosis. Born in Tennessee in 1943, Giovanni emerged as a leading voice in the 1960s Black Arts movement with her powerful poetry collections, including “Black Feeling, Black Talk” and “Bicycles: Love Poems”. Known for her accessible and socially conscious work, she was also an advocate for hip-hop, civil rights, and women’s empowerment. Giovanni taught English at Virginia Tech for over 30 years and wrote several children’s books, including the award-winning biography of Rosa Parks.
