A team of scientists at UC Berkeley has created a new color called “olo” using artificial intelligence technology. To see olo, participants must lie down in a specially designed room with a device that targets specific cells in the retina, triggering an intense visual experience.
The discovery was made possible by advances in AI narration and computer vision. Researchers Austin Roorda and Ren Ng led the research group that developed the new color. According to Roorda, experiencing olo felt like “a beautiful, ultra-intense teal” and had a profound impact on him as a scientist. The researchers’ achievement has sparked debate about what it means for colors to be considered “real.”
