The highly anticipated survival horror game, Resident Evil Requiem, is set to take players back to the eerie and foreboding world of Raccoon City. Producer Masato Kumazawa revealed that the game’s title, “Requiem,” holds multiple layers of meaning, including a tribute to protagonist Grace Ashcroft’s personal loss and a requiem for those who suffered during the Raccoon City incident.
Kumazawa explained that introducing a new, relatable protagonist like Grace was necessary to focus on horror in this installment. By making her vulnerable and reactive to fear, players will experience tension and immersion as she navigates through dark environments. The game aims to return to the series’ horror roots, focusing on atmosphere and suspense rather than action.
The decision to return to Raccoon City was driven by the desire to continue the overarching narrative rooted in the city’s secret machinations and the Umbrella Corporation’s sinister plans. With Resident Evil Requiem, the 30th anniversary of the series is celebrated by revisiting this iconic setting.
Regarding the game’s perspective, Kumazawa stated that including both first-person and third-person modes was a response to fan requests. However, developing two separate experiences in parallel poses significant challenges, particularly when it comes to fine-tuning balance, UI, sound design, and other aspects of the game.
The philosophy behind Resident Evil Requiem is centered around “addictive fear,” maintaining a sense of tension throughout the experience. This concept is achieved by creating an atmosphere where players become invested in uncovering what happens next, despite feeling terrified. By focusing on horror, the game aims to return to its roots and provide a thrilling experience for fans.
The RE Engine has been improved significantly through increased familiarity with the technology. Visual details such as sweat trickling down Grace’s skin and her anxious expressions showcase the advancements made in character modeling and animation.
