Respiratory Viruses on the Rise: What You Need to Know

Respiratory viruses, particularly RSV, are spreading rapidly across New York and the nation. The latest data shows a 22% increase in positive RSV tests in NYC during the week ending Nov. 30. Children under 4 years old account for 8% of emergency department visits, while those over 65 years old make up only 1.4%.

The good news is that two effective ways to protect babies against RSV are available: an RSV vaccine and monoclonal antibodies. Pregnant women can receive the vaccine between weeks 32-36 of pregnancy, which provides protection during their first RSV season. Infants who miss this window can receive nirsevimab, a 90% effective treatment.

Adults aged 75+ and those aged 60-74 at high risk for severe RSV are also recommended to get vaccinated. Meanwhile, flu cases in NYC increased by 47%, with hospitalizations rising across the state.

COVID-19 levels remain low in New York, but there’s a slight increase in transmission, particularly in NYC. This year’s season is expected to be different from last year’s, with COVID-19 activity beginning later due to community immunity from the summer wave.

Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 and flu is now easier than ever, with same-day appointments available at local pharmacies. Don’t miss your chance to protect yourself and those around you.
