A retired professor from the University of Alberta, Jutta Hinrichs, has died after being struck by a rockfall in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. Two others are also dead, while three people were injured and treated at a hospital.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon near Lake Louise, about 124 miles northwest of Calgary. The Bow Glacier Falls hiking trail, which is six miles long and considered a moderate challenge, was closed after the rockfall. Officials believe everyone else in the area is safe.
The University of Alberta described Hinrichs as a “dedicated leader and educator” who worked in occupational therapy. Her work continues to enrich the field, according to the university’s statement.
RCMP officials said one victim will have their information released when their family is notified. Parks Canada Superintendent Francois Masse called the rockfall an “extremely rare event” that was neither predictable nor preventable.
The trail has been closed indefinitely, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney offered his condolences to those affected by the tragedy.
