Retro Gaming Handhelds Hit by US Tariffs, Industry in Chaos

US President Trump’s 145% tariffs on Chinese imports have hit the retro gaming handheld industry hard. Anbernic and Retroid Pocket are among the companies suspending shipments to the US due to the increased tariffs. The situation has left enthusiasts panic-ordering devices, with many fearing they won’t be able to get them later.

The tariffs have made it difficult for companies to manufacture and distribute retro game consoles in the US. Ayaneo is “actively” working on its plan to address the issue, while Arduboy creator Kevin Bates is looking into US manufacturing but faces challenges due to the use of Chinese parts.

Industry experts warn that the situation is causing widespread panic and uncertainty, with some businesses forced to put their passions on hold. The tariffs are expected to have a bleak impact on small and medium-sized businesses in the retro gaming community.

“The whole premise of the sub-$150 market is that you’re getting an outdated phone system in a form factor that’s cheap,” says Zu and Stubbs, writers for RetroHandhelds. “It’s part of the fun to see new form factors and custom firmware.”

However, with tariffs set to increase to $200 per item by June 1, even cheaper consoles may become unaffordable. The situation has raised concerns about access and power shifts in the industry, with some fearing that US manufacturers will rely on Chinese parts to meet demand.

As the situation continues to unfold, many in the retro gaming community are left wondering what the future holds for their beloved hobby.
