Retro Phone Reduces Screen Time to $120,000 Success

A tech founder, Cat Goetze, created a DIY retro landline-style phone to reduce screen time and has turned her business into a huge success. The phone, called Physical Phones, was initially designed as a nostalgic project but quickly gained popularity.

Goetze’s idea came from wanting simplicity like old-school landline conversations. She built her own version using a thrifted pink clamshell handset and made it Bluetooth-compatible. When she shared the device online, hundreds of users wanted it, prompting her to launch an online shop.

Physical Phones connects to iPhones and Android phones via Bluetooth and rings when receiving calls from platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram. Outgoing calls can be made manually or using a voice assistant key.

The phone’s success reflects a growing pushback against excessive screen time and digital overload. Goetze believes people are seeking balance between technology and their lives. She says the goal is to use tech sustainably, with less negative impact on mental health and well-being.

Goetze sold $120,000 worth of Physical Phones in just three days, with over 3,000 units sold by the end of October. The phone’s production has been scaled up, with future shipments planned for December.
