Fort Worth’s oldest cemetery, Pioneers Rest, is getting a second chance at revitalization thanks to the efforts of its dedicated association. The historic site, which dates back to 1850, contains the graves of city founders and early settlers, including some notable figures like Gen. Edward H. Tarrant.
In the past, the cemetery had fallen into disrepair, but after a $2,000 grant from the Tarrant County Historical Society, the association began placing QR codes next to certain graves with biographies and photographs. This project has made the cemetery feel more alive, as one volunteer noted.
To continue their work, the association is in need of donations to replace broken headstones and repair fencing. They are also hoping to secure funds for a full ground-penetrating radar survey to improve their records.
Despite the challenges ahead, the association remains proud of the progress they’ve made, noting that visitors are increasingly interested in learning about Fort Worth’s early settlers. By supporting the Pioneers Rest Cemetery Association, community members can help preserve this important piece of local history.
