Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sparked outrage at a recent town hall event by claiming that “fetus debris” in MMR vaccines is the reason why many people, including some religious groups like the Mennonites, refuse to get vaccinated.
Kennedy’s claim has been disputed by medical professionals, who point out that viruses used to create vaccines are grown on cell lines derived from decades-old fetal and monkey tissue, but have since been purified and lab-grown. The Vatican had previously cleared vaccines for use by those with religious objections in 2005.
The Mennonites’ reservations about vaccines stem from concerns they believe interfere with God’s plan or contain harmful ingredients. While not all Mennonites share these views, the community has historically been strict in its adherence to religious principles.
The town hall event brought together a bipartisan panel, including President Donald Trump, who spoke via live phone interview, and several notable guests, including former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. The discussion highlighted the complex issues surrounding vaccine skepticism and the need for inclusive solutions that respect diverse perspectives.
