The demolition of RFK Stadium in D.C. is making significant progress, with crews tearing down the stadium’s signature roof beams from top to bottom. The goal is to minimize environmental and safety concerns while ensuring a safe site for the construction of a new stadium.
Over 814 tons of old metal are expected to be removed, which may be repurposed in local art pieces by D.C. artists. Seats from the stadium are also up for sale, offering fans a chance to own a piece of history.
The project’s executive vice president, Steven Johnson, emphasized the importance of environmental and safety concerns, saying, “We’re very sensitive to making sure that all of our priorities are in order.” Deputy mayor Nina Albert noted that watching the demolition is exciting, as it reveals new layers of design and provides a unique view of the Anacostia River.
The site’s transformation will be completed by fall next year, but whether the Commanders stadium deal moves forward or not, RFK had to come down due to safety concerns. The city is already thinking about ways to reuse the old materials in creative projects.
As the demolition progresses, fans can follow along via a live web stream on Events D.C.’s website.
