Ridley Scott is open about his regrets regarding two of his most iconic sci-fi franchises, Alien and Blade Runner. The director has always spoken candidly about his opinions, previously expressing concerns over the direction of the long-awaited Alien TV series.
One of Scott’s biggest regrets stems from not securing more ownership over both franchises earlier in his career. He had produced a massive box office hit with 1979’s Alien, followed by the critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful Blade Runner in 1982. Despite these films’ cult followings and eventual recognition as masterpieces, Scott did not secure significant ownership over either title.
The Alien franchise eventually fell under Disney’s ownership after the acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. In contrast, Blade Runner remains the property of Alcon Entertainment, with a new series based on the character Michelle Yeoh being developed for Amazon Prime Video.
Scott’s remarks suggest that he believes having more creative control would have improved the trajectory of both franchises. However, the director acknowledges his relative lack of experience at the time and the challenges of navigating Hollywood partnerships.
It remains to be seen how different the history of these franchises might have been if Scott had more ownership and control over them. Nevertheless, Ridley Scott’s candid reflections on his past decisions serve as a reminder that even the most accomplished filmmakers can look back on their careers with a mix of pride and regret.
