Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 Smashes Box Office Record with $87m Opening

Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated sequel, Gladiator 2, has made a record-breaking debut at the international box office, earning an estimated $87 million. The film, which stars Paul Mescal as a grown Lucius and Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington, has surpassed all other opening weekends for director Ridley Scott.

The movie follows Lucius’s journey to reclaim Rome and restore it to its former glory after the events of the original Gladiator. While receiving middling critical reviews, with some praising its thrilling action sequences and others criticizing its undercooked storytelling, audiences have responded positively, with many enjoying the film’s entertaining experience.

Gladiator 2 has broken box office records for Paramount Pictures’ highest international opening weekend for an R-rated film, as well as making it the largest overseas opening for any Ridley Scott film. The movie’s production cost was $250 million, and its financial performance remains to be seen.

The film stars Denzel Washington, who revealed in an interview that his character engaged in a same-sex kiss in the film but had it removed from the final version. Despite mixed reviews, Gladiator 2 is now playing in theaters worldwide.
