Ridley Scott is finally bringing closure to his prequel trilogy with a new Alien film. The director’s return to the franchise comes after the box office success of Alien: Romulus, which he previously directed.
Scott had originally planned to make a sequel to Alien: Covenant but canceled it instead. However, with his new film, he might be able to resolve the story he started 12 years ago with Prometheus in 2012.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Scott expressed his desire to finish the prequel trilogy, citing Alien: Covenant as a better setup for a sequel due to its cliffhanger ending and David’s remaining alien eggs.
Scott believes that Alien: Covenant laid the best groundwork for a sequel because it left room for further exploration of David’s story and the Engineers. His new film will likely address these unanswered questions.
The new movie will be an opportunity for Scott to show why he began his prequel story with Prometheus in the first place and give the franchise a chance to cohere and become more cohesive.
This development comes as several other Alien spinoff shows and movies are in development, including Alien: Romulus’ sequel and the upcoming show Alien: Earth.
Scott’s new film has the potential to fill in the gaps of the Alien timeline, clearing up questions about the xenomorphs and Engineers, and ultimately making it possible for further exploration into the franchise’s future.
