Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been appointed as a senior adviser by US technology company Microsoft and AI startup Anthropic. This comes after he applauds the tech giant in 2022, calling it “one of the founding fathers of modern technology.” The appointment is subject to conditions from Westminster’s Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba) to prevent conflicts of interest.
Sunak will provide high-level strategic perspectives on macro-economic and geopolitical trends without advising on UK policy matters. He joins Anthropic’s chief executive Dario Amodei, who has predicted that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years. Sunak donates his entire compensation to the Richmond Project charity, which aims to boost social mobility through numeracy.
This appointment marks a new role for Sunak after he resigned as UK Prime Minister in July 2024. His current roles include advising Goldman Sachs International and Bain Capital in the US, with net earnings of over £150,000 per talk.
