Road Toll Scam Alert: Know the Signs of Smishing

A new scam targeting road tolls has resurfaced, claiming people owe money for unpaid bills. The scammers send fake text messages with links to phish for sensitive information or install malware.

Last April, the FBI received over 2,000 complaints about smishing scams related to toll roads in three states. Smishing is a social engineering attack that uses fake texts to trick people into sharing info or sending money.

If you receive a suspicious toll road text, do not click on the link and verify your account on the legitimate website instead. Delete any spam texts and contact the toll service’s customer service number if needed. The FBI recommends securing personal info and disputing unfamiliar charges if compromised.

Check for the red flags: links to unknown websites, urgent deadlines, or requests for sensitive information. Never reply to or copy the link into your browser. Report suspicious messages to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
