Robert De Niro Starred in New Mafia Movie ‘The Alto Knights’

“The Alto Knights,” a new mob movie directed by Barry Levinson, tells the story of two crime lords, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, played by Robert De Niro. The film explores their friendship that turns deadly from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s.

The movie follows the lives of these New York City crime bosses as they develop different styles. Vito remains in control from behind the scenes, while Frank becomes a high-profile “professional gambler” who gains international attention. However, when Frank survives an assassination attempt by one of Vito’s associates, he realizes his friendship with Vito is no longer secure.

The film features familiar names and sounds of the era, including real-life figures like Albert Anastasia and Apalachin, as well as a soundtrack that includes hits from Keely Smith and Louis Prima. Debra Messing plays Frank’s wife, Bobbie, whose role seems limited to providing reassurance.

While the movie does not introduce anything new, it delivers what fans of mob movies expect: intense violence and memorable performances. Robert De Niro shines in his dual roles as Vito and Frank, bringing distinct characterization to both characters. His portrayal of a volatile Genovese is reminiscent of Joe Pesci’s work, while Costello’s jovial and strategic nature provides ample opportunities for De Niro’s signature ambivalence.

“The Alto Knights” is rated R for its violence, language, and mature themes. With a runtime of 2 hours, the film will keep viewers engaged until the end.
