Robert Eggers’ latest film, “Nosferatu”, has been making waves in the horror genre. Released by Focus Features on Christmas Day, it has already become Eggers’ highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office with $53 million and counting. The film received five Critics Choice nominations this season.
The story follows estate agent Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) as he travels to Transylvania for a meeting with Count Orlok (Bill SkarsgĂ„rd), a fictional character from the 1922 silent film “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”. Hutter’s new bride Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) is left in care while her friends Friedrich and Anna Harding deal with her increasing visions of dread.
Eggers’ fascination with “Nosferatu” started at a young age. He drew inspiration from the original screenplay by Henrik Galeen and Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula”. The film follows Eggers’ reimagining of the Count, who is both terrifying and seductive. Eggers used extensive backstories in his novella to understand why “Nosferatu” needed to be told again.
The film features stunning chiaroscuro visuals and an eerie soundtrack that draw the audience into a world of gothic nightmare. With its dark rotting character, “Nosferatu” is a masterclass in cinematic horror.
