Roblox Sued Over Alleged Failure to Protect Children from Predators

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has filed a lawsuit against online gaming platform Roblox, alleging that the company is not doing enough to protect children from adult predators. The lawsuit claims that Roblox’s lack of safety measures allows sexual predators to “thrive, unite, hunt and victimize kids” on the platform.

Murrill stated that due to Roblox’s failure to implement effective safety protocols, it endangers the safety of Louisiana’s children. She believes that the company prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety.

Roblox has faced criticism in recent months for not doing enough to protect kids on its gaming services. In Iowa, a lawsuit was filed after a 13-year-old girl was allegedly introduced to an adult predator on the platform, then kidnapped and trafficked across multiple states.

The platform claims to have a zero-tolerance policy for the exploitation of minors and allows children under 13 to chat with other users only if they have explicit parental permission. However, Murrill alleges that there is no substantial age verification process once a user signs up, allowing young children, teens, and adults posing as children to sign up.

Roblox has implemented measures such as an artificial intelligence system to detect early signs of child endangerment and “trusted connections” that require teenagers aged 13-17 to send a video selfie to verify their ages. Despite these efforts, Murrill believes that Roblox should be shut down due to its failure to protect children.
