NASA’s Curiosity rover has captured an impressive image of Phobos, Mars’ misshapen moon, along with the blue Earth in the Martian sky. This is the first time such a photograph has been taken from the surface of Mars. The image shows the ridge of Mount Sharp at the bottom and Phobos and Earth in the upper right corner.
From the rover’s perspective, the inset area containing the two celestial bodies would be roughly half the width of a thumb held at arm’s length. This remarkable view was captured on September 9, 2024, during the Curiosity rover’s 4,295th Martian day (called a “sol”).
The Perseverance rover is currently exploring the irradiated Martian surface for signs of microbial life that may have existed billions of years ago. While no conclusive evidence has been found yet, NASA has identified some compelling geologic leads. The Curiosity rover continues its ascent up Mount Sharp, which once experienced dramatic floods during a warmer and more hospitable period in Mars’ history.
