Robots “Grow” By Eating Other Machines

The researchers designed a robotic bar, called the Truss Link, which expands and contracts like an accordion. By connecting multiple Truss Links, robots can create complex structures that adapt to their environment.

In tests, the robots self-assembled into different shapes, such as triangles and stars, and even grew by incorporating new parts. They also healed themselves by repairing damaged connections. The researchers believe this technology holds the key to making robots more resilient and self-sufficient.

As robots become increasingly autonomous, they need to be able to sustain themselves without human maintenance. This “robot metabolism” brings us closer to that goal. With advancements in AI, robots are already thinking like living beings, but their bodies still have limitations.
