Guitarist and singer Rick Derringer has died at the age of 77. He was known for his hit singles ‘Hang On Sloopy’ and ‘Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,’ as well as his work producing albums for “Weird Al” Yankovic’s debut.
Born at 17 when his band The McCoys recorded ‘Hang On Slopy’, Derringer enjoyed a decades-long career in the music industry. He supplied guitar solos for notable artists like Bonnie Tyler and Steely Dan, and produced albums for Cyndi Lauper.
Derringer’s legacy extends beyond his music, with fans praising his energetic performances and talent. His passing leaves a void in the music world, and he will be deeply missed by those who knew him. “Weird Al” Yankovic has also paid tribute to Derringer, calling him an enormous impact on his life.
Derringer worked extensively as a session musician throughout the 1970s and ’80s, playing on albums for Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren, Kiss, and Barbra Streisand. He also toured with Ringo Starr and The All-Starr Band, and produced the World Wrestling Federation’s “The Wrestling Album”.
