Rocket Show for Aurora Lovers in Alaska State North

NASA is set to launch research rockets into aurora-lit skies in northern Alaska for the next two weeks, starting March 24. The Auroral Waves Excited by Substorm Onset Magnetic Events (AWESOME) project aims to study how auroras affect Earth’s upper atmosphere and potentially improve space weather forecasts.

From Eagle to Utquiagvik and Fairbanks, residents can witness rockets soaring through colorful vapor trails for up to 10 minutes at a time. The launch windows are between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., depending on weather conditions.

University of Alaska Fairbanks scientist Don Hampton explains that the aurora’s energy input causes atmospheric waves, similar to ripples on water. He notes that spectators can expect an impressive light show.

The experiment coincides with the solar maximum period, resulting in more frequent aurora activity. To track launch times and updates, text PFRRLAUNCHES (866) 485-7641 or visit the Poker Flat Facebook page.
