Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced Monday that top prospect Roman Anthony will join the team ahead of their series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. Anthony, 21, was called up from Triple-A Worcester after Wilyer Abreu was placed on the 10-day injured list with an oblique strain.
The move comes as a surprise to many, given that the Red Sox had expected to promote Anthony after Abreu’s injury earlier in the week. However, Cora stated that he didn’t want the team to play short-handed and instead chose to bring up Anthony to fill the roster spot.
Anthony is widely regarded as the No. 1 prospect in baseball and has been on a tear at Triple-A this season, hitting .288 with 10 homers, 29 RBIs, and a .913 OPS in 58 games. He will wear No. 48 for the Red Sox and will likely see playing time in right field.
The promotion marks the final step in Anthony’s rapid rise through the organization, which began with a $2.5 million signing bonus as a second-round compensation pick in 2022. He is now expected to join his fellow prospect Marcelo Mayer on the team, who made his major league debut just last week.
Manager Cora expressed confidence in Anthony’s ability to contribute immediately and help the team make adjustments as needed. “We’re trying to win games,” Cora said. “This kid has done an amazing job throughout his development, and we’ll use him the right way.”
