Roman Basilica Uncovered in London Skyscraper Site

Archaeologists have made a significant discovery at a construction site in central London, where they uncovered the ruins of a nearly 2,000-year-old Roman basilica. The ancient structure, built between 78 and 84 AD, was once at the heart of Londinium, the Roman name for London.

Excavations in the basement of a building slated for demolition revealed the remains of what was likely the foundation of a two-story building. The site yielded flint, brick, and ragstone walls, foundations 13 feet deep and over three feet wide.

The discovery marks one of the most significant finds in years in the City of London, where it is believed to have formed part of the forum – a public space for shopping, socializing, and hearing from politicians. Further excavation may reveal more about this ancient hub and shed light on the lives of Roman Londinians.

Property developer Hertshten Properties has agreed to display the ruins in a visitor center of the planned office tower, providing a unique glimpse into London’s Roman past.
