Romania’s presidential election has seen a surprise rise to prominence for ex-soil scientist Calin Georgescu, who is now leading in the polls. The 62-year-old politician claims to be a champion of peace and sovereignty, while his critics label him as divisive and pro-Russian.
Georgescu, who holds a doctorate in pedology, rose to fame on TikTok with anti-establishment rhetoric and has since attracted a large following. He is now facing off against Elena Lasconi from the Save Romania Union party in the final round of the election.
The ex-soil scientist denies accusations that he was backed by Russia and insists that his links to Vladimir Putin are nothing more than admiration for the Russian leader’s patriotism. However, critics point out that Georgescu has expressed admiration for Romanian leaders who collaborated with Nazis during World War II and has expressed skepticism over climate change.
Georgescu also advocates for stricter laws against LGBT+ “propaganda” and is deeply skeptical of COVID-19, claiming it does not exist or is greatly exaggerated. His stance on these issues has sparked controversy among the public and his opponents.
Despite this, Georgescu remains confident in securing victory and restoring Romania’s sovereignty. He plans to establish closer ties with Britain, citing a shared love for its art, music, and financial system.
