Tens of thousands of Romanians, including left-wingers and those angered by the election cancellation, protested in Bucharest on Sunday. They demand that President Klaus Iohannis resign and that the presidential election proceed as scheduled.
The court’s decision to void the election was made after allegations surfaced that frontrunner Calin Georgescu had benefited from an unfair social media campaign likely orchestrated by Russia. However, Moscow has denied these claims.
Iohannis will remain in office until his successor is elected, as per Romanian law. The pro-European government has agreed to hold the second round of the election on May 18.
Protesters say they want a return to democracy and are demanding answers from authorities regarding the cancellation of the election. Some carried portraits of Georgescu or Christian Orthodox icons, while others wore flags and vuvuzelas.
