Rory McIlroy has expressed his gratitude towards LIV Golf for boosting his bank account, contradicting his harsh criticism of the Saudi-backed circuit in its early days. During an interview ahead of this week’s Genesis Invitational, McIlroy admitted that he regretted getting deeply involved in the LIV vs. PGA Tour battle.
McIlroy stated that everyone has benefited from the split between the two golf tours, including those who left for LIV and those who stayed on the PGA Tour. He emphasized the need to move forward, rather than dwelling on past conflicts, and expressed his support for reunification.
The former critic of LIV Golf revealed that he earns significantly more now than he did in 2019, before the breakaway circuit emerged. This is not surprising, as many tour players have benefited financially from LIV Golf’s existence. The PGA Tour introduced the Player Impact Program (PIP) to keep top stars on board and created signature events with large purses.
McIlroy acknowledged that while some might be hurt by the split, it’s time to move forward and focus on progress. He encouraged everyone involved to “get over it” and work together towards a better future for golf.
