Rory McIlroy Struggles with New Driver Ahead of U.S. Open

Golf superstar Rory McIlroy faced a major challenge heading into the upcoming U.S. Open after missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open due to a poor round, shooting an 8-over 78. His second-highest score in any PGA Tour event for his career has raised concerns about his driving accuracy.

McIlroy’s latest performance was marred by quadruple bogeys, double bogeys, and four bogeys, with only two birdies. The golfer expressed frustration over the high score, stating he had hoped a new driver would solve some of his off-the-tee problems but it failed to deliver.

The issue with McIlroy’s driver has been a point of emphasis since the PGA Championship last month, where it was revealed that the driver was nonconforming and unusable after pre-tournament testing. The golfer had skipped media sessions during the tournament due to his frustration over the leak.

At Oakmont Country Club, which will host the U.S. Open next week, McIlroy’s accuracy needs improvement, particularly with the rough expected to be treacherous. His current ranking for driving accuracy is 170th, hitting fairways only 51.13% of the time.

With being cut from this week’s tournament giving McIlroy extra time to adjust his new driver, he has a chance to fine-tune his skills before teeing up at the U.S. Open on Thursday.
