Rosie O’Donnell has revealed why she moved to Ireland following President Donald Trump’s re-election and shared her thoughts on the “surreal” Oval Office moment where Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin was asked about her move. Appearing on RTÉ’s Late Late Show, O’Donnell said she felt troubled that Trump put Martin in a difficult position and didn’t treat him with respect.
O’Donnell has been critical of Trump since 2006, when she mentioned his bankruptcies and sexual assault charges on ABC’s The View. She said Trump continues to use her as a punchline despite two decades passing. O’Donnell had planned to move to Ireland months ago, following Trump’s re-election, and was drawn by her Irish heritage and desire to protect her autistic child.
The comedian explained that she wanted to shield her child from the stress of living in a country with a president who has been accused of undermining democracy and giving himself absolute power. Her child, Clay, is thriving in Ireland, O’Donnell said, and she’s finding it easier to cope without the anxiety of Trump’s presidency.
O’Donnell plans to stay in Ireland until her daughter enters secondary school and will return to the US for Blake’s wedding next year. She stated that experiencing mental health benefits since her move has been life-changing and relieved her of the stress of living under a president with whom she strongly disagrees.
