A crew member on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship stabbed a fellow employee multiple times before jumping overboard and dying, according to police. The incident occurred near the Bahamas off San Salvador Island on the Icon of the Seas cruise ship.
The 35-year-old South African man allegedly attacked the 28-year-old woman around 7:30 p.m. local time. He then fled the scene and jumped into the water. Onboard medical staff later found him unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead.
The woman sustained stab wounds to her upper body but is currently in stable condition. The ship’s crew initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately, the victim died before they could retrieve him.
Royal Caribbean released a statement saying they have no additional details about the incident due to respect for the family’s privacy. Passengers on board shared videos of crew members responding quickly after receiving the “man overboard” code, which prompted the ship to slow down and turn around.
The incident is under investigation, with an autopsy scheduled. The Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, was on a 7-night cruise out of PortMiami when the incident occurred.
