Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas Water Slide Malfunction Leaves Passenger Injured

A Royal Caribbean ship’s water slide malfunctioned on Thursday, leaving one man with undisclosed injuries. The incident occurred on the “Icon of the Seas” cruise liner when the unidentified man was using the slide and an acrylic glass panel broke.

According to a video of the malfunctioning slide, passengers frantically yelled for the slide to be stopped as water poured out of the side where the glass shattered.

Royal Caribbean released a statement about the injured passenger, saying they provided medical care after the incident and that the guest is being treated for their injuries. The slide has been shut down pending an investigation into its cause.

The company claims it is investigating whether the failure was due to a manufacturing defect, installation issue, or an unexpected impact. There is no timeline for reopening the slide.

This incident marks the latest in a series of incidents on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. The ship experienced a passenger jumping overboard in May, a minor electrical fire in June, and a technical issue that caused it to sail at reduced speed in September.

The ship’s construction took place between 2021 and 2022, with sea trials beginning in June 2023. Royal Caribbean has released statements about several other incidents on the Icon of the Seas, including a crew member stabbing a woman and jumping overboard in July.
