Royal Shakespeare Company Reimagines Macbeth for Gamers

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has launched a groundbreaking adaptation of *Macbeth* for video game enthusiasts, blending classic literature with modern technology. The interactive game, set in a surveillance-heavy Iran-inspired world, stars 2022 Cannes best actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi as Lady Macbeth (“Lili”).

Amir Ebrahimi drew inspiration from her experience as an Iranian woman in exile, grappling with authoritarian gendered oppression. The game offers players the chance to immerse themselves in the story of Lady Macbeth and make choices that shape her destiny. It features reimagined elements such as “hackers”代替witches, surveillance cameras, and cyber-infiltration mechanics, providing a unique perspective on Shakespeare’s dark themes of technological domination and institutional violence.

RSC director Sarah Ellis expressed excitement about reaching gamers and future audiences with this modern twist on *Macbeth*. She noted that the company has adapted Shakespeare’s works across various platforms—stages, screens, schools—and now wants to expand its reach into gaming. This collaboration reflects RSC’s commitment to bringing Shakespeare’s epic stories to new platforms, ensuring his legacy resonates globally.

The game is currently in development and is slated for release later this year.
