Rubio Gains Senate Democratic Support for Secretary of State Role

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin has announced that he will vote in favor of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) to become the next secretary of State. This endorsement suggests that Rubio is likely to receive overwhelming support from the Senate on President-elect Trump’s first day of office.

Durbin praised Rubio for his understanding of US foreign policy and his work with him on human rights issues, including counteracting China’s influence in Venezuela and advocating for the release of Uyghur prisoner Gulshan Abbas. The senator also expressed concern about Russian aggression towards European countries.

Another Democrat, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), predicted that Rubio would receive a strong bipartisan vote next week. She noted that there is precedent for quickly confirming secretaries of State, citing the swift confirmation of former President Obama’s nominee Hillary Clinton in 2009.
