Runway AI Inc., backed by Google, Nvidia, and Salesforce, has launched its most advanced AI video generation model, Gen-4, which introduces character and scene consistency across multiple shots. This capability was previously absent from most AI video generators.
The new system allows users to generate 5-10 second clips at 720p resolution and can maintain visual continuity while rendering realistic motion. Runway’s Gen-4 builds on the company’s previous tools, including Act-One, a facial animation feature released in October.
The launch comes as OpenAI released a similar image generation feature with character consistency, sparking debate about copyright and artistic style mimicry.
With its new funding round valued at $4 billion, Runway aims to reach $300 million in annualized revenue this year. The company has established partnerships with Hollywood studios and film production companies.
However, the industry faces concerns about job losses due to AI adoption. A recent study found that 75% of film production companies using AI have reduced or eliminated jobs.
As marketing agencies, educators, and corporate teams explore Gen-4’s potential, the focus shifts from technical capabilities to creative application. The tool represents both opportunity and disruption for filmmakers.
While AI video generation has the potential to remove friction in filmmaking, it also raises questions about imagination and purpose. As creators can now easily produce visually stunning content, the pressing question becomes: what’s worth showing?
