Russell Simmons Sues HBO Over ‘On the Record’ Documentary for $20 Million

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons is suing HBO and the filmmakers behind “On the Record” documentary for $20 million, alleging they defamed him. The documentary, which aired in 2020, centered on sexual assault and misconduct allegations against Simmons from numerous women. Simmons’ lawyer claims the filmmakers disregarded evidence supporting his version of events, despite having received credible information from notable members of the media and politics.

In a written statement, Simmons’ lawyer Imran Ansari accused HBO of releasing a film that “tremendously disparaged” and “damaged” Simmons with “salacious and defamatory accusations”. HBO has denied the allegations, stating they stand by the filmmakers and their process. The lawsuit seeks removal of the documentary from HBO’s platforms and $20 million in damages.

Simmons has faced multiple sexual misconduct lawsuits, including a confidential settlement with one of the women featured in the documentary for $1,265,000. Over 20 women have accused him of sexual assault, and the statute of limitations for defamation actions in New York is one year from the date of first publication. To prevail, Simmons will need to show that HBO’s defamation is recent enough to warrant damages.
