Russia has amassed over 50,000 troops near Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, with the goal of launching a summer offensive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that Kyiv has taken measures to prevent a large-scale attack, while Russia appears to be gearing up for a ceasefire negotiation.
The troop build-up is seen as part of Russia’s plan to establish a “buffer zone” along its border with Ukraine. According to Zelenskiy, the Russians aim to carve out an area of Ukrainian territory approximately 10 km deep. However, Kyiv has previously pushed back Russian advances in eastern Ukraine, including near the city of Kostiantynivka.
Zelenskiy expressed his willingness to engage in further peace talks, stating that he is open to a three-way meeting with US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasized his commitment to continuing the Ukraine peace process, despite concerns from Washington about progress.
Recent negotiations between Ukraine and Russia have been held in Istanbul, but failed to produce a ceasefire sought by international partners. Zelenskiy identified Turkey, the Vatican, Switzerland, Malta, and African nations as potential venues for future talks with Russia. He has accepted an invitation to attend the upcoming G7 summit in Canada and will likely participate in the next EU summit.
Kyiv is seeking $30 billion in funding this year to support its domestic arms production efforts.
