Russian forces launched a massive drone assault on Ukraine early on January 2, deploying 72 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including combat drones like Shahed. Ukrainian air defenses successfully destroyed 47 of the drones, while 24 failed to reach their targets and one remained airborne.
The drones were intercepted across multiple oblasts, including Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kyiv, and others. The Air Force stated that Ukraine’s defenses were effective in neutralizing the threat without causing harm to infrastructure or civilian lives.
The assault was launched from various directions, including Russia’s Bryansk, Oryol, Kursk, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk regions. Ukrainian forces countered with a comprehensive defense effort involving aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare systems, and mobile fire teams.
